Lily of the valley is associated with spring, renewal and luck. The reason why is said to be because King Charles IX of France was given a lily of the valley plant on 1st May in 1561 to bring him luck. Being of a superstitious nature, he decided to give a plant to the ladies of his court every year on that day. The French continue to present lily of the valley nosegays as gifts on 1st May; it’s a public holiday known as La Fête du Muguet.
